ABOUT
Our Mission: All votes should matter
NYC Open Primaries is a New York City-based not-for-profit organization, building a grassroots movement to make our City elections more democratic. We’re a non-partisan effort that believes that opening our “closed primary” election system - to all registered voters - will result in a more representative government. A government that’s more responsive to, and held accountable by, the true majority of voters. With open primaries, we’ll be able to build a New York City that works better for all of us.
In America, elections should be fair
It’s pretty simple: independent and other third-party voters can’t vote in major party primary elections in New York City. That’s more than 1.5 Million voters in New York City who can only participate in municipal general elections, which in nearly all cases are meaningless elections. That’s not fair. American democracy should not require a voter to choose a party.
